Biographie
Diplomate et professeur de chinois.

– Docteur en droit. – 1867 Attaché aux services consulaires en Chine. – 1880-1885 Vice-consul à Pagoda Island, puis à Shangaï. – 1885-1893 Consul d'Angleterre à Tamsui, puis à Ningpo en Chine. – 1893-1897 Séjour à Aberdeen. – 1897-1932 Professeur de chinois à l'Université de Cambridge. – 1902 Premier maître de conférences à la Dean Lung Foundation à la Columbia University. – 1916 Fondateur d'un prix biennal à son nom à l'Académie des inscriptions et belles-lettres.
